Starfield Early Skill Recommendations: What Background to Choose After creating your character in the game Starfield, you can choose your character’s background. Your character’s starting skills are determined by your background, and only the first three skills are determined. Here are some recommended early skills and a background that I personally think is the most versatile.
Increases oxygen capacity. Running and jumping consume oxygen, so having a little more can be helpful.
Increases carrying capacity. Weapons, equipment, and items take up inventory weight. When overloaded, you can’t move quickly, and it consumes more oxygen. If you enjoy collecting equipment, it’s best to increase your carrying capacity.
Increases maximum health points. This is useful for players who struggle with shooting. Although the increase is not significant, having more health points reduces the risk.
Reduces purchase prices and increases selling prices. If you want to save more money, choose this skill.
Increases the success rate of persuading others. Persuading NPCs with your words is a major feature of this game. With a few sentences, you can easily complete quests without fighting. Highly recommended.
Enables the ability to steal items from NPCs.
Increases the range of spaceship jumps. It’s not very necessary in the early stages, but as you progress in the game, when the distance between star systems becomes too far, teleportation becomes inconvenient, and this skill is needed.
Increases the amount and speed of healing from medical packs. This skill is also useful for players who struggle with shooting.
When wearing a flight pack, jump into the air and press jump again to jet a certain distance. It’s very useful for traveling quickly, especially in places where jetting is required to pass through obstacles. Note: Even if you wear a flight pack, you cannot fly if you don’t have this skill.
Allows the use of spaceship thrusters. It’s necessary for piloting spaceships during aerial combat.
Enables the ability to crack advanced locks. Some item boxes and doors require this skill to open them. Unlocking certain doors can provide shortcuts in quests, but it’s also possible to find alternative routes without unlocking them.
Unlocks spaceship targeting functionality. Sometimes quests require you to shoot enemy ship engines and then board their ship to capture them alive. If you don’t have this skill, you might accidentally destroy their ship and kill the enemies.
For recommended skills, you can either choose backgrounds that come with some skills or use skill points to select them yourself in the first few levels. So actually, it doesn’t make much difference which background you choose because soon you will have skill points to get the skills you want.
For skills that are highly recommended to have, you can start without them but must have them when specific quests require them; otherwise, you may encounter difficulties or even get stuck in the game. So I personally recommend choosing “Bounty Hunter” as your background so that you don’t have to worry about this issue and then gradually acquire other skills yourself. You can also leave one skill point unused so that when you encounter trouble due to a lack of a certain skill during a quest, you can use it as an emergency solution instead of having to level up again.
Each skill has challenge tasks that must be completed before using skill points to upgrade that skill. You cannot upgrade a skill if its corresponding challenge task has not been completed.
